Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)

Making Private Education More Affordable
Haciendo la educación privada más accesible

What is the Texas Education Freedom Accounts?

The Texas Legislature launched a new savings account program to give families more choices in their children’s education. This program is called the Texas Education Freedom Accounts. Starting with the 2026–27 school year, students who qualify will receive funds that can be used for things like tuition, tutoring, home‑school materials, or other approved educational expenses. For more information, visit the Texas Education Freedom Accounts website.

Who is eligible to participate?

Children can take part if they are U.S. citizens or legally present in the country and are eligible to attend a Texas public school, charter school, or pre‑K program. Kids whose parent is serving on active duty in the U.S. armed forces are also included. To qualify, the parent must live in Texas.

How much funding will families receive for children who are accepted into the program?

The amount of funding depends on each child’s situation:

  • Private school students Families can receive about 85% of the average state and local funding per student in Texas public schools. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will set the official amount in January 2026, but it’s expected to be around $10,800 per child for those attending an approved private school.

  • Students with disabilities Children who have an individualized education plan (IEP) on file with their school district may qualify for additional support — up to $30,000 per year to help cover specialized educational needs.

When can families apply?

The initial application period is expected to open on February 4, 2026.
